Clementi: Capriccios & Variations

Clementi: Capriccios & Variations

$16.97

Howard Shelley’s recordings of Muzio Clementi’s piano music, having traversed his dozens of piano sonatas over 12 compact discs, came to a close with this miscellaneous two-disc set of non-sonata works. They’re definitely a grab bag, dating from all stages of Clementi’s career. Serious students of music around 1800 are probably the main market for this release, but there are some intriguing items. Two of the Capriccios on the first disc are among Clementi’s last works, composed in 1827 when he was well into his eighth decade. They are strikingly modern in style, given the capriccio title apparently because they broke the bounds of sonata form, and they contain many echoes of Beethoven and even of the young Liszt. The opening Adagio of the Capriccio in C major, Op. 47/2, is in 5/4 time, perhaps the first work ever to receive that time signature. Some of the music must have been written for Clementi himself to play, and throughout there are hints of the beginnings of the 19th century piano virtuoso figure. But all of it was published and found a ready market. Works like the Twelve Monferrinas (meaning dances characteristic of Italy’s Monferrato region), also late pieces, were intended for general players; each one is two pages long, and many of them have the concision that’s appealing in Clementi’s more compact sonatas. The most offbeat work is the set of Musical Characteristics, Op. 19: imitations of Haydn, Kozeluch, Mozart, Franz Xaver Sterkel (who is being twitted, one suspects), Vanhal, and lastly Clementi himself. It is not known why Clementi wrote these pieces, but they offer fascinating insights into how audiences of the early 19th century heard Haydn and Mozart, who come off as considerably more improvisatory than is usually thought. But of course a piano concert of the day would have had a good deal of improvisation. Shelley’s modern grand, beautifully recorded by Hyperion, has the agility and color to bring out the odd variety in these works. Probably a few of his sonata discs would make better places to start with this composer, who can be counted as a contemporary of both Mozart and Beethoven, but those well-invested in the series will enjoy this. ~ James Manheim, Rovi Performers: Howard Shelley – Piano
